History of Manchester City Football Club

Manchester City football club was founded in the 1880’s as St Mark’s football club, they became Ardwick football club in 1887 and then Manchester City football club in 1894.

Manchester city’s home stadium has been the City of Manchester stadium since 2003. They were previously at Maine road from 1923.  The stadium is now more commonly know as the Etihad Stadium and is the fifth-largest stadium in the Premier League and the twelfth-largest in the United Kingdom, with a seating capacity of 47,805. It was originally constructed for use during the 2002 Common Wealth games. After the games the stadium became home to Manchester City FC who moved here from there Maine Road grounds during the summer of 2003.

The club was purchased in 2008 by Abu Dhabi United Group and became one of the wealthiest in the world as a result.

Travelling to Etihad Stadium from Clayton Hotel Manchester Airport couldn’t be easier. It is just a 16 mile journey which takes about 24 minutes by car or taxi. The easiest way to avoid match day traffic when travelling to the Etihad Stadium is to use the Manchester Airport train station, we even offer a complimentary shuttle bus from all 3 terminals the train station and back to the hotel! From the train station you can access the 3 major stations in Manchester City Centre. From there you can get either a bus or tram which takes you directly to the Etihad Stadium.
